This summer for fun, I designed and made a handful of love filled tee's.
Each were hand drawn and illustrated, and I spent a morning with my screen printer who brought them to life.
Oh, and he wasn't just 'any old' screen printer. Oh no no no. I found and chose to work with a guy who's been doing it for 40+ years. He not only knows his stuff, he's passionate about it too, giving each piece individual care and attention, as he prints each by hand.
FROM FIRST SKETCH TO FINAL TEE
When I started designing, I grabbed some paper and my great big marker and started drawing.
I drew, and drew. Dozens of sheets of paper, all covered in LOVE.
Yet none of them felt right. I scanned them in, tweaked and played in Photoshop, yet they weren't 'right'. I can't always tell you what's off - I'm a very intuitive kind of designer, heart and gut rules over head - all I knew were these weren't it.
So back to the drawing board. I dug out my favourite pen and those same love filled sheets and started sketching in all the left over spaces. Dozens, hundreds more - filling in every gap.
Once I lost count, I spread every single sheet of paper out across the floor, culling the ones that missed the mark, that still felt off. They were perfect in their own way, yet just not for this...
And then I found it. The ‘one’ - hidden at the bottom of the page.
I scanned and tweaked - just a little - getting it ready to send to my printer, a guy who spends an equal time and care making everything just so.
Sure, there's easier ways, just type something up, choose the first 'love' you write. Send it off to some printers with the cheapest online.
And yet, it’s not about that. I never want it to be about just that.
It might take twice, three times, ten times as long, however each item I always want to be designed and made and packaged with equal amounts of love, so that each and every wearer can feel that - what it's truly made of.
